The Glencairn Whisky Glass is my favorite for tasting and drinking whisk(e)y; and I have over 30 at home, enabling me to enjoy whiskies with my friends. I like the solid feel and the simplicity of the design. I think I’ve purchased about a dozen of them directly; and I picked up the rest at various distilleries that I’ve visited.

It was developed with the aid of whisky master blenders by Glencairn Crystal Ltd, in Scotland for drinking whisky, and first came into production in 2001. The shape of the glass is derived from traditional nosing glasses used in whisky labs around the world.

The glass is designed with three key features:

  1. Tapered mouth: Provides ability to capture aromas when nosing, and facilitates easy sipping.
  2. Wide bowl: Provides simple visualization.
  3. Solid base: Provides stability.

The capacity of a typical Glencairn whisky glass is approximately 175 ml (6 US fl oz), and it is intended to hold approximately 30-60 ml (1 to 2 US fl oz) of liquid.
