According to the Scotch Whisky Association, The Islands are actually part of the Highlands. However, they have unique characteristics; and many people now refer to The Islands as a separate region (as do I), The Islands represents all of the Inner Hebrides off the Atlantic coast of Scotland, except for Islay.

The climate of The Islands is distinct from that of the mainland by being maritime, wet, and pummeled by fierce winds. However, the winters are rarely severe and palm trees flourish in the more sheltered spots.

The peat traditionally used to dry the barley gives Islands whisky a wonderful smoky aroma, while the maritime location contributes berries, sea salt and spice.
