Tasted this distillery-exclusive whisky at Rugen Distillery with a tour hosted by our wonderful guide and bartender, Menno. The distillery is located in Interlaken, Switzerland, and has gorgeous views of the Alps. When Switzerland legalized distillation of grains in Switzerland in 1999, Rugen became the first to start making single malt whisky. This whisky was triple distilled in a hybrid pot+column configuration and fully matured in a new Swiss Oak barrel for 5 years that had previously been the home of a honey-bee hive. The hive was removed, and after toasting/light charring, the new make spirit was placed in the barrel to mature. The price was $90 for 500 ml. Price shown is scaled up for an equivalent 750 ml bottle.
