Tasted at Saratoga Whiskey Club Tasting # 89 - Stauning Danish Whisky. Stauning was founded in 2005; and they use local grains to make their whisky. The composition of this whisky is 1 cask malted barley (matured 4-5 years) + 2 casks smoked malted barley (matured 4-5 years) + 3 casks rye (70% malted / 30% raw, matured 3 years). Both the rye and barley are floor-malted at the distillery. I have categorized this as a Single Grain Whisky, because, technically, by definition, that's what it is. But, there is no neutral grain spirit in it - just a marriage of the three core Stauning products. Stauning doesn't call it single grain - They market it as a new category called Triple Malt Whisky. Sorry, guys, I disagree - There's no such thing as triple malt (or double malt, for that matter).
