Shay's Rebellion American Whiskey was made in collaboration with Sam Adams Brewery. In 2012, Berkshire Mountain Distillers decided to triple distill a batch of Samuel Adams Cinder Bock. The resulting spirit was then aged for 3.5 years in Sam Adams Utopias casks. The last battle of Shay's Rebellion took place just three miles from the distillery, and they wanted to create a whiskey that celebrated Massachusetts' spirit of independence. This was a limited release of less than 3,000 bottles. In trying to determine how to categorize this experimental whiskey, I landed on Single Grain, since it's made from a Bock beer, which is primarily malted barley, but not technically a single malt, either. Tasted at Saratoga Whiskey Club Tasting #2 - Craft Distillers.
